Sea foam is an old phenomena created by algal
matter, it’s not harmful and it’s often an indication of a
productive ocean ecosystem. Human activities can also
contribute to the formation of sea foam. It’s likely that periods
of bloom where a lot of spume was concentrated appeared in
early ages. In mythologies the sea foam give birth to creatures
such as Aphrodite but also Peitho, Admete, Lanthe, Elektra,
Polydora. The same word is connected to spume and froth;
the salive from crisis, hysteria, effort and anger;
« ideas spume with elemental fury, where thoughts arise
noisily ... where at other times there is a stillness like the deep
silence of the South Sea, » Repetition, Kierkegaard
The work presented in Xiamen at NAC is based upon legends of the
sea and collected histories in the harbor. The drawings of
people are like quick notifications of stories heard from people I
meet mixed up with old characters on a large paper
wrinkling in space presented at the art center. Covered with the
white sea foam, the drawings disappear and then reappear in
another shape partially erased when it dries during the exhibition.
Partly there are only stains left. Like a white noise of
the sea, covering or silences the load waves. We try to speak, to
understand each other, we almost always fail, we repeat
again and again, spume accumulate in the corners of the mouth. There’s always new histories to be told about sea, always new legends out of sea
foam ready to be reinterpreted and creature to emerge
